"IF"

by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

this is one of my favorite poems and i had first come across this poem when i was just 10. something about this poem has stuck on and stayed with me through my formative days.its the best motivation anyone can ever get.

recently i saw so many imminent people give up fame, power and money; while they were at peak.it has always made me wonder what it must have cost people like, Bill Gates, Saurav Ganguly, Anil Kunble, Suchitra Sen; to give something they loved doing. how much it must have effected them to give it all up while at the top. seriously i don't know if ever i will get to do something i love and then give it all up. what would you do? would you be able to give up something while at the top?

hey i too have read he poem and its really nice..

i believe that life is a situation... u got to live in the moment...
and the question is that WHAT FOR would you give up the work you love doing? there are very few lucky people who actually do what they want to do.

P.S: i love Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book

Nice poem !! Loved it...

When you ask "is it possible to leave what you really liked and made comparisions witj Saurav, Kumble", i assume we have taken the fact that since they have retired they are out for once and all... Where as i think there s a small difference... Maybe they could have quit from playin, yet it will remain with them in their daily life...

You breathe, live, feel what you really life... I think it will be there with you for eternity...

May be on top is something that we decide instead of those people you mentioned.
For them they were just ordinary.
